In its early days, French explorers called the area “Grosse Pointe”. This nickname was derived from a piece of land that extended into Lake Michigan. In 1851, Northwestern University was founded by a group of Methodists, and these founders wanted the city to be named Evanston (they wanted this name in honor of John Evans, one of their big time leaders). In 1857 their wish was granted, and in 1863 Evanston became formally incorporated as a town. During the post Civil War years, Evanston gained more land with the annexation of North Evanston and finally became a city in 1892 when South Evanston was annexed. Modern day Evanston has outstanding schools, recreational opportunities, and beautiful homes. Festivals and concerts are an ongoing thing when you need to go and have fun. Shopping, dining, and sporting activities are also abundant in Evanston. This city is also known for its wonderful health care and scenic parks, both which enhance the quality of life residents live within this region.
