The off-beat village of Lake Bluff saw its first settlers back in 1836 after the northeastern part of Illinois became open for settlement once the Indians were given enough time to move out. John and Catherine Cloes, along with their son Henry, obtained 100 acres of land. This land would become what is known as Lake Bluff today. However, in 1849, John Cloes became obsessed with the California gold rush and headed out west with several neighbors to find his fortune. He never came back. He died in Sacramento, leaving Catherine and his new family behind. By 1855, Lake County saw its first railroad. This railroad ran from Chicago through Waukegan, and a man by the name of Henry Ostrander insisted that if the railroad depot was going to be located on his land, the depot had to be called “Rockland”. This came about, and Rockland had a single post office, one tiny school, a general store, and a church. By 1875 the Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association was formed by religious leaders, and the area known as Rockland was renamed Lake Bluff. In 1895, Lake Bluff was officially incorporated and secured its status as a suburb for all future residents. The first president of the village was Charles Trusdell, and in 1895 the East School opened up, and by 1905 Village Hall was constructed. It is interesting to note that Al Capone used Lake Bluff as one of his major smuggling areas for alcohol during the Prohibition Era. Since Lake Bluff is located along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, Capone would bring alcohol down in bulk shipments from Canada via Lake Michigan to arrive at the shoreline of Lake Bluff. This booze would then be distributed into the larger urban areas for consumption.
