Wauconda means “Spirit Water” in Native American tongue. Supposedly the village was named after a great Indian chief who held the same name. In 1848, a man by the name of Justus Bangs became the first settler in Wauconda. Bangs Lake, a gorgeous lake that has its banks running up toward Wauconda, was named in honor of Justus Bangs. The first town meeting took place in 1850. Most of the streets back in these days were lanes. There was also a stage route that ran from Chicago to Janesville, Wisconsin. This particular stage route went directly through the village. When the first post office was built at Slocum Lake, it was given the name Cornelia. Thomas Slocum became the first Post Master, and his wife Mary helped out in an assistance role. The post office eventually moved from Slocum Lake over to Bangs Lake when an effort to establish a permanent settlement along the Cornelia settlement came up short. A church was constructed in 1877, and limestone was a big time business back in the early days, and there was plenty of it in Wauconda. In 1850, the population of Wauconda was only around 200 people.
