European architects were called in to help out with this enormous task. A three-story mansion was erected with gardens and horse stables to go along with it. The gorgeous estate was known as Lakeland Farm, and Mr. Dole entertained many guests here over the years. He threw lavish parties and even built a racetrack on his property for his horses. Eventually Mr. Dole grew tired of his love for horses and decided to sell them. The Dole family resided in the mansion until the late 1800’s. The property was eventually sold to Mr. Dole’s son in law for one dollar! In the 1900’s, some ice companies ran their operations out of the mansion. The delivery of ice was a big time thing back in those days, and Crystal Lake itself provided an excellent source of ice. When refrigeration came into the picture, the ice business went out of business! Today, the Dole Mansion is still a popular attraction, and an annual festival is held at this spot every year.
