Antioch was not always such a great place to live. There was a time of great turmoil and unrest throughout the area, and throughout the entire country in general. The village was founded just before the Civil War began. A Protestant group known as the Disciples of Christ (now known as the Church of Christ) named the town "Antioch", named after a Turkish city with the same name. The city of Antioch in Turkey was a main center during the early days of Christianity, so the name seemed appropriate to the founders of the town. However, once the Civil War broke out, Antioch sent a large number of troops into battle for the Union Army. Many lives were lost in this terrible war, but since Antioch was seen as a central center for the entire Abolitionist movement, the people felt compelled to take a very active part in the war against slavery. There were also several fires in the years 1891, 1903, and 1904 that wreaked havoc on the downtown area. Much of the downtown area was left in ruins from these fires, but the town did rebuild with brick structures and implemented a public water system. A volunteer Fire Department was established by the year 1913, and town began to flourish over the years by harvesting ice for iceboxes, a big time industry that helped the area to grow. Modern day Antioch is a much beloved place. There are numerous schools throughout the area so your children are brought up with a good education. Carnivals, craft fairs, and other special events are held throughout the year in Antioch, making this a cozy, tight knit community for both young and old.
