Antioch was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians. When white setters began to encroach on the area, this bold tribe fought with the British in the War of 1812 and then battled American settlers again during the Blackhawk War of 1832. Eventually the Indians were forced out of the area and placed on reservations. One of the first long lasting white settlements in the area was the Gage Brother's cabin, located along Sequoit Creek. Hiram Buttrick constructed a sawmill beside the creek, and this sawmill established Antioch as a main center for commerce. After the terrible Civil War, where Antioch contributed many Union soldiers to the battle lines, the town began to grow as new settlers of English and German descent flooded into the area. These new settlers established farms and commercial sites, and by the late 1800's Antioch was a "hot spot" for tourists to come and visit. Tourism augmented even more as the railroad came into the area, and residents could travel to the city of Chicago. Antioch featured hunting, fishing, and gambling back in the early days, which attracted tourists, along with a tranquil country lifestyle that was appealing to many compared to the noisy, big city life. A series of fires destroyed the downtown area in the late 1800's and early 1900's, but the town rebuilt and now has become a thriving modern day community with numerous schools, arts and recreation, and beautiful park areas.
